Lou Capodilupo, Hendricken, 103 pounds

Capodilupo is only a freshman but already is a varsity state champion at 103 pounds. Capodilupo surprised even Hendricken head coach John Davidson with his first-year performance. Capodilupo was 26-3 overall, 12-1 in dual meets. An aggressive wrestler and very quick on his feet, Capodilupo is expected to move up next year, possibly to the 119-pound class.

Keith Bilotti, Mt. Hope, 119 pounds
Bilotti posted a 37-3 record with 29 pins at 119 pounds. For his career at Bristol/Mt. Hope, he was 123-30. Three out of his four years as a varsity wrestler, Bilotti was a state champion. He finished third at this year's New England Tournament. He excelled at takedowns and his overall knowledge of the sport made him good in all other areas of wrestling. Bilotti will attend Roger Williams University.

Kevin Cleary, Burrillville, 171 pounds
Cleary put together a dream season for Burrillville. The Broncos senior was unbeaten in 29 bouts at 171 pounds and pinned 28 of his opponents. Cleary was voted the best wrestler at the state tournament when he pinned all four of his opponents and wrestled a total of less than three minutes. Improved confidence in his abilities was the main reason for his success this year.

Ed Jencks, Coventry, 275 pounds
Jencks had little trouble winning his second straight state championship at heavyweight. The 260-pound Jencks went 26-0 during the season and went on to finish second in the New England Championships in Essex Junction, Vt. His strength and surprising quickness on his feet are key reasons Jencks is a two-time state titlist.

Matt Medina, Smithfield, 160 pounds
Medina is the other state champ from Class B. Not a slick or fancy wrestler, Medina went 26-5 at 160 pounds and worked extremely hard at improving his skills. Good on top and at riding an opponent, Medina was always willing to take time for extra work after practice in order to achieve his goal of becoming a champion.

John Rogers, Mt. Hope, 145 pounds
Along with Thielman, John Rogers moved over to Mt. Hope from Warren and became a state champion at 145 pounds. In fact, they were the first state champs from Warren since 1982. A defensive wrestler at the start of the season, Rogers gained more confidence as the year went along and finished being the aggressor on the mat. He won 31 of 39 bouts

Dan Garthwaite, Coventry, 189 pounds
Garthwaite returned to wrestling this year after taking a year off as a junior and won 22 of 27 bouts at 189 pounds. The Coventry senior improved as the season went along and peaked at the state tourney where he upset previously unbeaten James Haselton of Burrillville in the championship bout after having lost twice to Haselton during the season.

Mike Bowry, Cranston East, 135 pounds
Fourth a year ago in the state tournament, Bowry began a serious quest for a state title this year about midway through the season when he changed his approach to the sport and became more dedicated to winning. The East senior went on and compiled a 27-4 record at 135 pounds.

Dan Thielman, Mt. Hope, 130 pounds
Thielman, a junior from Mt. Hope, posted a 31-8 record at 130 pounds. His remarkable progress in all areas of the sport allowed him to become a state champion. Thielman, seeded fourth at the state tournament, pulled off a surprising victory when he upset Damien Ferretti of Hendricken in the finals.

Chhy Mao, Coventry, 112 pounds
Chhy Mao lived up to all expectations by winning the 112-pound state title and putting together a sensational 24-2 record. The Coventry junior, a finalist as a sophomore, displayed extroardinary skill at taking opponents to the mat and then dominating them with his quickness.

Aaron Becker, Coventry, 125 pounds
Becker moved up two weight classes after finishing second at 112 a year ago. Coventry coach Bob Smith called Becker, 28-2 at 125 pounds this year, the most complete wrestler for the state champion Oakers. An honor-roll student, Becker hopes to attend either WPI or Columbia.

Ken Leite, North Providence, 140 pounds
Leite was one of two Class B wrestlers to win state titles, Leite's at 140 pounds. After being 30-1 during the dual-meet season, Leite placed sixth at the New Englands where he split six bouts. Quickness on his feet made takedowns a specialty for the Cougars' senior.

Brad Oliver, Mt. Hope, 152 pounds
Oliver was another three-time state champ from Mt. Hope and was a finalist in all four of his varsity seasons. Oliver's 35-2 record at 152 pounds this year gave him a career mark of 117-21-2 at Bristol/Mt. Hope. Like Bilotti, Oliver will attend Roger Williams University.
